English Speech in NTUST
About yerterday’s English speech, since the people are really not much, I even wonder I made a mistake about the time. However, I came into class when a foreign teacher greeted me with smile.
Actually, it seems the speech meeting was like an activity or a program, by the Toast Master organization. Activities like self introduction, English speech, Q&A and image story were so much routine. Those Taiwanese speakers did always hesitate and sound redundant noise, and also speak with a flat intonation (They were really like the sound record of a translator).
As I thought it was wasting my time, big surprise came! The language evaluator is Robert Johnson (the president of English program in summer vacation), telling the audiences about what shall we do to make a good English speech. If someone say he had been the main role in the speech, I won’t doubt. Here are his hints:
- Speak slow
Taiwanese students usually make the mistake, always trying to speak too fast. And must notice "she" and "he" correctly. - Microphone Handling
Put the microphone from our mouth a short range, to avoid a boom produced that interrupt thinking and make listener uncomfortable. - Use body motion
Besides hands and body movement, he said eye expression are also important. Try to be more confident and show the best to your audiences.
